We are sad to announce that John Eugene Savarese, 63, of Rockville Centre, passed away on October 17, 2022. John spent his childhood growing up in Wantagh, NY. He excelled at swimming and was the captain of his high school swim team. He later shared his passion for swimming with others, through teaching lessons and lifeguarding for many years for the Town of Hempstead, where he was beloved by his co-workers, many lovingly knowing him as “Sav.” He graduated from St. John’s University and was a lifelong fan of their athletics, most notably basketball. John held season tickets and never missed a game, usually accompanied by his best childhood friend, Michael Leninger. John spent most of his career as an educator at Floral Park High School. There, he spent over 30 years, and was, as usual, a fan favorite of the student body. He also spent many years coaching the football team. A New Yorker and Long Islander to his core, John was an avid Yankees supporter, and a lover of Billy Joel whom he saw in concert countless times. John was a man of faith and generosity, who always looked out for his friends and family. He had no children of his own, but always held his nieces and nephews in the highest regard and would do anything for them. John will be sorely missed by all that had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his parents, Bunny and Jerry Savarese of Wantagh, his sister Susan Meriam, of Rockville Centre, his brothers Paul Savarese of Rockville Centre and Robert Savarese of Hilton Head, and his nieces and nephews—Julie Ford, Bryan Meriam, Thomas Meriam, Anthony Savarese, Kathryn Meisenheimer, Elaine Savarese, Peter Savarese, Hannah Savarese and Olivia Savarese, as well as his great nieces and nephews Charlotte, Klara, Jake, Pierce, Grace, and Sofia Capri.
