Obituary

James M. (Jim) Surless of East Meadow, NY passed away on October 28, 2024, at the age of 82. Beloved husband of Joanne for 61 years. Cherished dad of Darlene Eichhorn (Oliver), Pamela Bryceland (James), James Surless (Stacey) and Andrea Gropf (Thomas). Loving grandfather of Olivia, James, Kaitlyn, James, Brian, Samantha and Riley. Caring uncle, cousin, and a devoted friend and colleague to many. Anyone who knew Jim, loved and adored him.

*****

Jim earned an Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Farmingdale College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, graduating as the valedictorian of his class while working a full-time job. Jim started his career as a Draftsman for Levitt & Sons and then moved on to be a Civil Engineer for Henderson and Bodwell. He began working for the Long Island Rail Road as a Civil Engineer and stayed with them to pursue his passion for fire safety as a Fire Safety Officer and Fire Marshal. Jim then became the Fire Safety Manager at Queens Public Library System and most recently worked at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center which he truly loved. Jim was a proud member of the East Meadow Fire Department for 60 years, steadily moving up the ranks within Engine Company One and the Department, serving as Company Lieutenant, Company Captain, Chief of the East Meadow Fire Department and was a sitting Commissioner of the East Meadow Fire District. Jim was further involved in the community, volunteering at St. Raphael’s Church as a Eucharistic Minister and with various organizations including the Kiwanis Club. Jim had a passion for music, playing saxophone for several bands from his teenage years until recently.

****

Above all, Jim loved spending time with his family, especially his 7 grandchildren who he adored. He enjoyed the love of family during the holidays, family celebrations, vacations and every opportunity he had to share with them. Jim will be deeply missed by all of the lives he touched.
