Obituary

Bill Trageser passed away on January 21, 2024 after a long battle with Leiomyosarcoma. He was 59. Though we are heartbroken that Bill’s life was cut short, we are thankful for the love he showed each and every one of us, and the impact he’s had on so many. Life’s miracles are often unexpected surprises, and Bill was no exception. In 1964, sonogram technology was not what it is today. Blind spots were common. So when Albert and Marcella Trageser were welcoming their son Al into the world and the contractions didn’t stop…Bill… followed. Being one of seven, the Trageser’s were known throughout Rockville Centre. Their household had an open-door policy. It was loud and busy and felt like the kids ran the asylum. Bill and his brother’s played soccer in the street, or “Kill the Guy with the Ball” with anyone willing to prove they had guts. Tragically, Bill’s mom passed away when he was six years old. It was a devastating time for the Trageser’s, but Bill’s grandmother Virginia was always there to lend a helping hand.

Bill’s love of Deep Sea fishing appealed to his adventurous spirit. Hooking Tuna, Sea Bass, and Sharks, weighing well over himself, brought the most triumphant smile on his face. Tumultuous waters only encouraged him to press on. As an educator, Bill was dedicated to helping children who were blind or had visual impairments. His patient demeanor and personal experience made him an ideal teacher. Careers aiding others often give back to those who share the best of themselves. It’s no surprise that Bill would meet the love of his life while doing what he did best. Michele was a fellow special education teacher with a heart to match Bill’s. The two fell in love instantly. They were married and moved to Merrick where they started their family. Michael and Meg were born and his love opened wider than he realized it could. Always the teacher, he imparted his children with life’s lessons through actions and then followed with the words “It’s the right thing to do.” As time passed Bill shared with Michael the subtleties of grilling and the importance of preparing meals for family and friends. With Meg he shared his love of fishing – the peacefulness of nature and the comfort of stillness. Affectionately called “Uncle Froggy” by his many nieces and nephews, Bill would do anything for a laugh, even imitating the silly face of a frog. He challenged his cheek bones and contorted his mouth until his face resembled a misshapen muppet. Bill wore many faces, but each of them retained his strength and courage. He demonstrated time and time again that he would live his life beyond its limitations. After his diagnosis five years ago, Bill carried on as he always did, with a smile. As we stand on the beach, looking out beyond the horizon, we’ll hold each other and smile as he would, for we know he’s been invited to fish with the Master of the sea.
