I remember when Uncle Mike and the entire Marino family came back into my life after a long hiatus due to uncontrolled circumstances. My Mother married and divorced my Dad, Fred Johnson, Aunt Flo's brother before my fist birthday. I never knew my dad. Fall 2004, we reconnected. they drove up to meet us at our home in Northampton, MA, met my two children and husband. The connection was instant, as if time never passed. He was natural with my kids, Emily especially took a liking. Aunt Flo said it reminder her of when Gina was a little girl. Uncle Mike told me stories about my father, Freddy. Uncle Mike was a great friend to my Father. He remembered my Mother and babysitting me. A real gem of a person.
In the last 18 years, I was blessed with really getting to know Uncle Mike and have him in my life. I enjoyed our phone conversations, talking about life and dancing. We had a beach outing together. I was at such peace just sitting with him and listening to the ocean. I felt a quiet connection. I am grateful for the time I spent with him and for all the trips north he took to see us. His absence is a great loss for many, A big void of kindness and gentle nature he leaves behind. I will miss you, Uncle Mike.

Growing up, we all have a bunch of uncles, but some of us are fortunate enough to have an uncle who stands above the rest; one who makes you look forward to visits and actually pays attention to you when you’re around; one who stops talking and patiently watches the dopey little Thanksgiving show you and your cousins slapped together in the basement; one who might even help build some of the scenery if he can sneak away from the boring adult conversation for a few minutes.
Uncle Mike was my “cool uncle,” the adult family member who always looked and acted at least a generation younger than all the others. His brother, Phil, was lively, loveable, and full of good humor, but, like all the grey-haired uncles on my father’s side of the family, Phil was a grown-up. Only Mike was young enough and hip enough to be my cool uncle.
Uncle Mike worked at the airport and knew how to make a 7-year-old kid feel really special with a set of Eastern Airlines junior pilot wings or a captain’s hat, gifted on a day that wasn’t even close to your birthday. In his younger years, he had sort of an Elvis vibe about him, and even played some guitar. He and Aunt Flo gave me my first Gene Krupa and Sandy Nelson albums, a slam-dunk of a birthday gift for a kid who was already hooked on drumming and would never be the same after hearing these two masters for the first time. Enviously, I watched him wholeheartedly support my cuz, Peter Michael, at his Blue Max Drum Corps competitions later on, his face lighting up whenever he spoke about Pete’s affinity for rhythm or about the masterful routines executed by this troupe that he followed everywhere. Whether filling us in on the highlights of Peter’s later accomplishments, beaming with pride about Gina’s many successes in her chiropractic and wellness practice, or grinning with gleeful admiration at his wife’s infectious spirit and energy, Uncle Mike was always “all-in” on his family, and his enthusiasm certainly trickled down to this particular nephew.
Though the opportunities to see him as an adult were few and far between, I always looked forward to the times Louise and I would meet Uncle Mike and Aunt Flo at the theater in Manhattan or at a local restaurant. Covid, followed by Uncle Mike’s health issues, rendered these get-togethers non-existent in recent years, but the few telephone conversations we had with him, although maybe a little light on actual words, were very special to me in other ways. I still had so many questions saved up for when I finally got to see him again – things about my Mom and various incidents that only he would be able to explain - but I suppose these questions were meant to remain unanswered.
Uncle Mike may not have inherited the longevity gene that kept his mother, his sister, and his brother alive well into their eighties and nineties, but from the window through which I watched his life unfold, he sure seems to have lived his eight decades really well. As old as I get and as juvenile as it may sound to say it out loud, he will always be my “cool uncle.”

Remembering the good times we shared over the many years. The wonderful friendship you had with my dad. I know dad was there to greet you when you crossed over. You will be very missed but you will live on through my beautiful memories I have of you over the 58 years I had the pleasure of calling you family.
The two picture I share is one from our trip to London to see Peter’s play. I remember going on the Beatles Tour and crossing Abbey Road together! The other picture is from my mom and dads 60th wedding Anniversary.
Mike I will miss you, may you Rest In Peace until we meet again.
Love, Deb

Oh, Mike! You and Flo were there for every show, every milestone. I especially loved our time together in London for Pete's West End debut. You are -- and always will be -- one of the good guys.
Flo, Pete, Gina, and Neil: Thinking of you all. Our hearts are with you. We have many family "residents" at Holy Rood. When we visit them, we will visit Mike to let him know we are thinking of him.
All love,
Norma

Mike Marino. I once went fishing with Mike. He usually didn’t talk much, so it was fun to hang with him in a place other than the theater. I usually only saw him at the theater or just after.
Mike came to all the shows that I did with Pete. It was so impressive that he and Flo showed up, time and time again, and it always meant so much to me because my parents live so far away.
Sometimes I’d get to see him at a Marino family party – like his retirement party, which was a very good party – I remember watching him, and hearing a little history about the people there.
When I went fishing with Mike that time, he talked slightly more than usual. He talked about Pete’s shows and his work in Edinburgh. We talked about sunscreen, or lack thereof. We talked about the fish we caught. It was easy to hang out with him.
I really liked the guy and Norma and I will miss him very much. So much love to you, Flo, Peter, Gina and Neil.
