Barbara Ann Schenke, age 88, passed away on February 28, 2022. Barbara was born in Jamaica, NY to Lena and William Gerken and grew up in Bellerose, NY. She had a three-mile walk to and from high school every day in all kinds of weather. She was a Triangle Girl, a youth group for daughters of the Eastern Star and the Masonic Fraternity. Barbara graduated from Kings County School of Nursing in Brooklyn in 1954 and was licensed as a Registered Nurse the same year. She began her career in the operating room of Kings County Hospital Center and continued on to Long Island Jewish Medical Center. She eventually became the Supervising O.R. Nurse at Queens Memorial Hospital. She met the love of her life, Ray Schenke, when she was 16, and they wed in 1957. They raised two children, Linda and Ken. Barbara was always active in her church as well in scouting. She was a Girl Scout leader for over ten years and also active in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. After raising her family, Barbara returned to work as a nurse at A. Holly Patterson Nursing Home. During her twenty-five year career there, she went on to become a Charge Nurse, Rehab Nurse and Admissions Coordinator, and a community health ambassador. During this time, Barbara also worked for the Nassau County Department of Social Services as a Nursing Home Placement Coordinator. After her retirement, Barbara and Ray moved to their lakeside home in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Barbara became active in the Lord and Tailor Thrift Shop as well as the Summer Fair for her church. She also periodically worked as a Wolfeboro Caregiver. Barbara and Ray enjoyed many years traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada and enjoying visits from family for sun-filled summers at the lake. Barbara is survived by her loving children and their spouses, Linda and Jim and Ken and Linda, her grandchildren, Brittany, Eric, Rob, and Jason, and her two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Francis.
