Obituary Part 1
William H. Mueller passed away at the age of 95 on September 13 at his home in Levittown, New York, after a brief illness.
A native of Yonkers, New York, Mr. Mueller was educated in Yonkers public schools and interrupted his college education to enlist in the U.S. Army after the United States entered World War II. During the war, he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star medal, the Belgian Order of the Fourragѐre and four Campaign Stars for his service in the European Theater of Operations, which included heroic combat service during the Battle of the Bulge. He was the recipient of the New York State Conspicuous Service Medal and was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Following his tour of duty in World War II, Mr. Mueller earned a Bachelor’s degree (Cum Laude) and Master’s degree in aeronautical engineering at New York University.
After college, Mr. Mueller joined the Grumman Corporation in Bethpage, New York, from which he retired after 36 years of professional activities, specializing in engineering design and the application of data processing. He started his Grumman career in 1950 and held positions in both engineering and data processing disciplines. These included Deputy Director, Engineering Computer Systems, in Grumman Aerospace Corporation; and Manager of Computer Applications for the Engineering Department and Director of Applications Software for Grumman Data Systems Corporation. At retirement, he was the Senior Staff Member, Technology Development, for the Aircraft Systems Division.
Obituary Part 2
While at Grumman, in addition to publishing various engineering papers, Mr. Mueller was the co-inventor of the Lunar Module (LM) Alightment System (landing gear) of the Apollo Space Program. He was a member of the honorary engineering fraternity, Tau Beta Pi; the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (Association Fellow); and the Association of Computing Machinery.
In his Masonic Lodge, Bethpage No. 975, of Farmingdale, New York, he served as Master and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. His Masonic activities included membership in the Royal Arch and Cryptic Bodies, as well as the Knights Templar, Scottish Rite, the Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine and Masonic War Veterans. Following his tenure as District Deputy Grand Master of the Second Nassau District, he was a member of the Committee on Benevolence and consultant to the Finance Committee. After serving as Grand Treasurer in 1988, Mr. Mueller was elected a Trustee of the Masonic Hall and Asylum Fund in 1989 and served as President of that organization for five years, before retiring in 2002. He was awarded the Charles Henry Johnson Medal of the Grand Lodge of New York in 1998.
In addition to his Masonic service, his civic activities included Director of the Levittown Little Leagues, Levittown Midget Football League, founder of the Levittown Midget Lacrosse League and President of the Long Island Midget Lacrosse League. One of his most cherished civic activities was his service for 20 years as a Naval Academy Information Officer (Blue and Gold Officer), assisting and counseling young people seeking to gain appointments to the U.S. Naval Academy. For this service, in 1989 the Naval Academy awarded Mr. Mueller its Commandants Award. He was an emeritus member of the International Supreme Council, Order of DeMolay, and for some years was the Executive Officer in the Jurisdiction of New York. He was recipient of that organization’s Honorary Legion of Honor.
