Thinking of my brother Jim, everybody liked having him around. He always had a story to tell us. He had us laughing all the time. I was the first one in my family to buy a house on Long Island. He came over all the time, loved being with my daughters, Diane and Joyce. He once stood on his head to have Diane eat when she was a baby in the highchair not wanting to eat. . I laughed so hard when he did that! The standing on his head did the trick. Baby Diane did eat! He was so good to have around. He loved his entire extended family so much that once he traveled to Italy to look up the family tree. And he did a great job.
I will miss my brother Jim very much. I was so happy for him to have a happy family life with Mary Ann. I will keep Mary Ann and all who loved him in my prayers.

When I was dating George he would come with my family to Sunday dinner at Nana's and grandpa's. George said it didn't matter that he didn't eat a lot because nana made marinara sauce which he disliked because the Sunday show was worth it. Grandpa and Uncle Jimmy would tell family stories and put their spin on it. Uncle Michael would walk in and pull up a chair next to grandpa and the three of them would keep going. The apartment was small so my dad and Uncle Frankie sat in the kitchen and would add to what was going on. You could hear my dad say to Uncle Frankie "you know he jumped out of a plane". He was admired for his service. Uncle Joe would say did that really happen and Uncle Jimmy would take off with more stories. We all laughed so hard. Now it's the eighty's and I worked with Maryann in Allied's accounting office. We had many laughs and I knew Nana would have loved her. When Uncle Jimmy moved to Delaware he came back to visit us. He sent Christopher his army blanket to keep warm when he was on track in high school. In true Uncle Jimmy form his note said I tried to get the fart smells out. When Danielle brought home flat Stanley and had to send him on an adventure he went to Delaware and came back to us with many details of his army adventure. Well the comedy group is now complete and they have a new audience to entertain.

For me, Uncle Jimmy always had a special presence. Like his brothers, my Uncle Frankie and Uncle Michael who passed before him, Uncle Jimmy was a unique DeLuca. What stands out for me, was his appreciation for irony with a lighthearted sense of humor. He allowed himself to be placed in harm’s way while working within the army’s special forces. I marvel at and miss Uncle Jimmy’s ability to hold simultaneously both great courage and humor with ease.
As a child, I remember a time when my family visited him after an army deployment. He showed us a video simulation of a Green Beret mission. So when my Girl Scout troop scheduled a camp out weekend during late fall, I sought out uncle Jimmy’s guidance. He lent me his army sleeping bag and explained the technique of blocking out coldness from the ground by spreading down newspapers below the sleeping bag. The supposed “camp out” ended up taking place in a heated cabin! But I did sleep in his army sleeping bag. And I always treasured his offering those survival skills to me.
I miss Uncle Jimmy very much. I’m glad he gained an additional, loving family with Mary Ann. My faith informs my hope that we will all meet again in our eternal home. I will keep all his loved ones in my prayers.
