Walter was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 5, 1938 and grew up in Ridgewood, Queens NY. After graduating from Grover Cleveland High School in 1956, he continued his education by taking mechanical engineering courses at night through the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and while holding a full-time job at M.W. Kellogg. Walter worked his way up from the mail room to a junior designer then Senior Draftsman and later as a designer at Vitro Corporation. He met his lovely bride, Eleanor McKenna-Sheridan, at a church dance, and they were married on November 26, 1960. They remained married for 59 years. Walter continued to work his way up through various A&E Engineering/Design Firms.

In his personal life, Walter was actively involved in the Knights of Columbus (Council #2345), holding several positions over the years. He also volunteered for St. Catherine’s of Sienna Outreach Program and St. Vincent de Paul, dedicating most of his retirement years to those in need. At home, he enjoyed toiling in his garden growing vegetables, flowers and plants to create beautiful landscapes. Walter also spent a good deal of his retired time investing in stocks and bonds, a self-taught financial investor who did quite well considering he had no formal training. Walter enjoyed fishing and was an avid sports fan, having played both basketball and baseball in high school, and golf later in his retirement. In fact, in high school, Walter was offered a basketball scholarship to the University of Miami but had to turn it down to help support his family with a job. One of his favorite high school memories was when he played a pick-up basketball game and had a 6’9” person guarding him, who later turned out to be Ray Felix, a future Knicks superstar that would win Rookie of the Year just a few years after being his opponent. Walter’s favorite professional sports teams were known as underdogs, but he maintained an unwavering loyalty to the Knicks, Mets and earlier before they moved to LA, the Brooklyn Dodgers. Walter is survived by his beloved wife, Eleanor McKenna-Sheridan, his three children: Terry Bendel, John Sheridan and Linda Shea, six grandchildren who always brought him so much joy: Stephanie, Christopher, Conor, Brooke, Matthew and Kirsten, as well as his younger sister, Maureen Mohr of East Islip.

Although no floral arrangements can be accepted due to COVID, donations may be made on his behalf in lieu of flowers to St. Catherine of Sienna Church Outreach Program, where he had volunteered regularly.
