Obituary
Obituary of Helen Rose Hill
Born August 20, 1921, in NYC at Manhattan Maternity Hospital (327 E 60th St NYC), baptized at St. Elizabeth
Church (211 E 88th St. NYC) to Gustave Francis Kalin and Barbara Cecelia Kalin (nee Romanchek). She resided at 1315 Ave A NYC, until her parents decided that country life was better suited for a family.
Helen Rose Hill was an early resident of East Meadow settling there in 1926, where Helen's father Gus built his own house on Marlboro Street where it stands today. The family grew to include Barbara Rodin(d), Theresa Severson and Gus Kalin. Helen was in the first graduating class from Newbridge Road Elementary School. Helen recalled roller-skating down Newbridge Road when it became a paved road, swimming in the sand pit, and picking daisies in the fields around her home. She was a member of the 4H club. There was
no church or high School in East Meadow at that time, so she attended Hempstead High School (Class of
1938) and attended church at the St. Loretta's Catholic Church in Hempstead. Her first job was at Double Day. She met Charles Peter Uihlein from North Merrick and married in 1941. They made their first home on Hemlock Street and then Falcon Street, where she lived for 36 years. She was blessed with three children Charles Peter Uihlein Jr., Robert E. Uihlein and Eileen Uihlein Donohue (William Donohue). She became grandmother to Kristina Uihlein Holzweiss (Michael), Jennifer Uihlein, Larissa Falkowski , 'Nana' to Lauren Donohue Lyons (Christopher) and great-grandmother to Tyler, Reilly and Lexi Holzweiss and
Gregg Lyons. Her nieces Barbara-Alice Abrams and Melinda Harris were very special people in her life, as were Valerie and John Falkowski, and Dianne Lawrence. She lost her husband in 1968.
In 1974 Helen forever confused future genealogists by marrying William Charles Hill (from West Hempstead), the father-in-law of her younger brother Gus, and the husband of Eileen, making Helen the aunt and grandmother to the same people and embracing the family members of her beloved Bill as her own. For 15 happy years, Bill used all his Irish charm on Helen until he passed away in 1988. Bill's family includes Eileen Kalin (d)(Gus), Jane Yuhas (George), Sharon Koller (d)(Joe) and Bill Hill (Diane).
Bill and Helen's grandchildren/nephews/nieces include Kalins-Gus, Bill and Kathleen (Kevin Mullen), Yuhas- Nancy(d), George (Audra) and Michael (Stacy), Kollers-Denise and Joe (Christina) and Hills-Michelle Iannuzzo (Paul) and Chuck Hill. Great grandchildren/nephews/nieces are Kalins-Gus, Daniel and Melanie, Yuhas- Jordan, Leah and Gabrielle, Mullens-Patrick and Brendon, Kollers-Marissa and Sam, Iannuzzos- Alexis, Nicholas and Ryan.
Helen retired from the Town of Hempstead, recreation department in 1986. In 1995, Helen moved to Spruce Creek in Port Orange Florida. She attended New Covenant United Methodist and later Venetian Bay United Methodist Church where she was a member of the bible study group. She volunteered at the Cornerstone Broadcasting station and attended a bible group there for many years. All her church family became special people in her life.
She enjoyed her days surrounded by photos and writing cards and notes to family and friends, reading the newspaper and magazines, picnics at the beach, attending concerts, visiting family, joy riding, creating Christmas gift boxes for children in need, attending special celebrations, remembering cruises, and watching movies.
Helen passed away June 20, 2014, at home with family and friends. She will be buried at Holy Rood
Cemetery in Westbury, NY.
